The red alert continues in Abrojo

November 30, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The red alert continues in the south, in the community of Abrojo, due to the threat of landslide.

Carlos Viales, Corredores’ Mayor, declared that at this time 112 people have been sheltered in the community hall of Abrojo and authorities are accelerating the process to find a place for the people who had to leave their homes.

Experts from the Central American School of Geology, at the University of Costa Rica (UCR), have been conducting a technical evaluation in the area, but the incessant rains have not allowed them to do a field inspection.

The mayor informed that they are considering the possibility of establishing 3 bases near the vulnerable area. They have also spoken with firefighters and the Red Cross to set an alarm that is activated by the residents from Miramar of North Abrojo if they detect a slope.

At the moment, geologists’ recommendation from the UCR and the National Emergency Commission (CNE), is that people do not enter the area because the rains of the last days have made the ground unstable and it could collapse at any time.
