While walking in the center of San José, pay attention because 35 sewers have a message for you:

The trash you throw here reaches the sea.

These are messages painted on streets and sidewalks of San José: they are part of a campaign promoted by VerdeAgua CR organization, whose objective is to promote the city’s environmental health.

On January 15th, about 40 volunteers painted the messages and the silhouette of some marine animals that are affected by the wastes.

There are some people who think it’s normal to throw garbage in the sewers,

declared Marisol Amador, president of the Foundation.

Recent estimates from the Ministry of Health indicate that Costa Ricans throw about 300 tons of garbage a day in vacant lots, rivers, streams or sewers.

The goal is to create environmental awareness and promote the use of landfills. In addition, people need to understand that the trash you see in the city can reach the places of recreation and vacation,

added Amador.

The campaign is being applied in the center of San José, but they expect to spread it to other parts of the country.

The initiative was possible thanks to the support of some private companies and the volunteers.
