The US will be the only country outside the Paris Agreement

November 8, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Tuesday, Syria announced at COP23 in Bonn its intention to join the agreement to fight climate change in Paris, according to an NGO, which would leave the United States as the only nation in the world willing to stay out of the agreement.

They have said that they will adhere to the Paris Agreement,”

said Safa Al Jayussi, director of the NGO IndyAct, which mentioned the statement of a Syrian delegate in plenary session to his fellow negotiators at the UN conference in Bonn on Tuesday.

The United States had ratified the agreement signed in 2015, but President Donald Trump announced earlier this year that he was abandoning the agreement because he believes it’s detrimental to the interests of his country.

On that climate issue, nobody wants to be next to Donald Trump, who is in splendid isolation,”

said Alden Meyer, an expert with the US think tank Union of Concerned Scientist.

When even Syria, with all its problems, understands the importance of a global climate agreement, this shows how the Republican Party in the United States is ideologically committed to climate denial,”

said Mohamed Adow of the NGO Christian Aid.

Syria and Nicaragua were the other countries that were outside the Agreement. Nicaragua joined recently.
