June 25, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Costa Rican Chamber of the Food Industry (Cacia) was worried about the constant theft of containers with merchandise, which cost them ¢ 3.5 billion to the Treasury.

According to estimates of this group, in the last year, the value of the stolen goods is estimated at more than ¢24 billion.

Only between 2018 and 2019 the cases of assaults to containers with merchandise have increased by 44%.

It is necessary to activate the municipal quality controls and consumer protection, sanitary control by the Ministry of Health, SENASA and the State Phytosanitary Service; the Fiscal Police for the strong tax evasion and the prison system, due to the recurrent participation of organized crime that does not see a great threat in the current administration of justice,”

said Mauricio Musmanni, head of this group.

Cacia called for joint actions from institutions such as Finance, Security, OIJ, Tax Police, Customs, Economy and Health, among others, to find solutions to the problem.
