There a new technology to treat cancer

March 15, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Authorities from the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) and San Juan de Dios Hospital presented a new technology to deal with cancer.

This is a tomography simulation system for radiotherapy planning, which can be connected wirelessly to México Hospital.

According to Hugo Recinos, head of the radiotherapy department at San Juan de Dios Hospital, it is a great technological advance from the treatment-planning point of view:

We will be able to locate the tumor and its exact position, size, shape, relationship with neighboring anatomical structures and critical organs that are involved within these masses.

For users, he said, this system represents a very accurate treatment, with fewer adverse effects.

This team will be complemented with the construction of the new Joint Center for Cancer Care, which will include two linear accelerators and will offer treatment to patients from San Juan de Dios Hospital, National Hospital of Geriatrics and Gerontology and the National Children’s Hospital.
