There is a strike on Second Avenue today

April 25, 2018 by Staff News Writer

There is a strike scheduled for today on Second Avenue, as a protest against the Law for Strengthening Public Finances. The demonstration will begin at 10:00 a.m. at La Merced Park and take the Second Avenue to the Legislative Assembly.

Albino Vargas, general secretary of the National Association of Public Employees (ANEP), said that the demonstration is being held to express concerns over that bill, which includes the Value Added Tax and some variants to the public employment regarding the payment of bonuses.

According to Vargas, when they reach the Legislative Assembly, they will announce their messages against the tax bill, although they do not expect to be received by anyone in Congress.

The first to join the strike were the workers of the Costa Rican Railway Institute (INCOFER), who did not provide the train service since the early hours of the morning.

In addition to trains, this is expected to affect schools and colleges, as well as the services of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS).
