There were more than 5,000 earthquakes in 2016

January 2, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The seismographic network from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported more than 5,500 earthquakes in the country during 2016, but only 162 were felt by the Costa Rican population.

According to the report of the entity, the greatest number of earthquakes felt by the population occurred in the month of July, as a result of the earthquake in Bijagua de Upala, which had a magnitude of 5.4 degrees.

In fact, this was the largest tremor during the year, and it was caused by a system of local faults at a depth of 7 km.

Another telluric movement that stood out in the year was the earthquake in Capellades de Cartago on November 30th, as it generated about 1,000 aftershocks. The event occurred in a fault with swarm seismicity since 2012.
