There’s a price on Ziad Akl’s head in prison

November 21, 2018 by Staff News Writer

A large sum of money was offered at La Reforma to poison Lebanese-Canadian Ziad Akl, according to a report by an official of the Institutional Care Center (CAI) Jorge Arturo Montero (formerly known as La Reforma) sent to the director of the National Center of Specific Attention, Maribel Mora, dated September 14th, 2018.

Apparently, the idea is taking advantage of the fact that Akl follows a special diet due to religious restrictions. However, before the threats, the authorities suspended the special food, which Akl complaint about during his trial, assuring that he has found stones in his food. He also said that he needed three stomach pumps and asked for a fair trial. Akl also noted that when he receives a visit his food is thrown away.

My girlfriend brought me pizza and an officer grabbed it and threw it away. He said they made a new regulation and this is not true,”

said Akl.

Ziad said he has been in jail for a year and a half and has received unequal treatment. In addition, surrounded by five agents, he pointed out that they see him as a monster when he has been respectful of the process and the trial.

The prosecution asked 35 years in prison for Akl, but his lawyer Alejandra Araya asked the court to analyze the evidence and impose a maximum penalty against him of six years, for two attempts of extortion.
