These cantons remain on green and yellow alert

July 25, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Although weather conditions have improved in the last days, there are still several cantons that remain on green and yellow alert, according to the National Emergency Commission (CNE).

A preventive green alert was established for the province of Limón and the Turrialba canton. Only Guatuso and Sarapiquí remain in yellow alert.

The CNE keeps its operational structure active due to the saturation of soils that is still present in certain areas in the North Zone and the Caribbean Slope. The works for the first impact for the rehabilitation of cantonal roads, the attention of people in shelters and the process of damage evaluation are still taking place.

The atmospheric instability of the last week affected a total of 573 communities, in 52 cantons of six provinces of the country. From the beginning of the emergency, 31 shelters were activated, of which 12 are currently enabled for the care of 968 people (314 families) who were at risk.

Since then, 10,852 food rations have been distributed in the cantons affected by the rains, as well as 2,194 mattresses, 3,334 blankets, and 1,100 water bottles for people who are being supported in the shelters and who were affected by the landslides and floods.

The CNE calls on the population to be cautious in areas with vulnerability to landslides and floods and to report through the 9-1-1 system any emergency event that may arise.
