Three Costa Rican volcanoes show seismic swarms after earthquake in Honduras

January 11, 2018 by Staff News Writer

After the 7.6-magnitude earthquake, which occurred on Tuesday near the Atlantic coast of Honduras, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported seismic swarms in three volcanoes: Tenorio, Miravalles and Irazú.

These low intensity movements were generated after 8:51 p.m., when the earthquake was recorded in Honduras. The information was confirmed by a report published by OVSICORI.

The tectonic seismicity in the form of swarms has been recorded between the volcanoes Rincón de la Vieja, Miravalles and Tenorio in the months and years prior to the earthquake in Honduras on January 9th. On the contrary, in Irazú Volcano, for a period of several months, no seismic swarms had been recorded until about three hours after the Honduras earthquake mentioned above,”

quotes the report.

These swarms would be produced by virtue of the possible influence of surface seismic waves. These are of great amplitude and capable of generating this type of effects in areas farthest from the epicenter.

In the case of the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes, the seismicity -with magnitudes between 2 and 4.3 degrees- began 5 minutes after the earthquake.

According to a report from the US Geological Survey, the earthquake in the Honduran Caribbean occurred at 8:51 pm on Tuesday. The epicenter was located 44 kilometers east of the islands of Cisne and 10 km deep due to the Swan fault.

The Honduran archipelago is located between Belize and Cuba.
