September 28, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Through a videoconference, an American reported to the Criminal Court of Quepos how she was raped by a man named Cortés in Costa Rica, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

It all happened on April 20th, 2006 at Manuel Antonio beach in the evening, when five men, including Cortés, approached a couple who were on the beach. The man was beaten in the head, while the woman, of American nationality, was raped by Cortés who also took away her belongings.

The role of the Office of Technical Advising and International Relations of the Public Prosecutor’s Office was vital in order to achieve the sentence and help locating the woman, and her testimony was obtained through a videoconference, which wasfundamental to prove the facts.

Cortés was sentenced to 25 years in prison, 18 years for committing a felony of qualified rape and seven years for aggravated robbery. The sentence was issued on Wednesday.
