Ticos sink ship with drugs but Coast Guard stops them

April 9, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Three men identified as Umaña, Corrales, and Irias, were arrested by Coast Guard officers of the United States when they sank the boat they were traveling in and from which 5.9 kilos of cocaine were recovered.

The boat identified with the name “El Pana Life” was 318 kilometers from Limón when it was intercepted by US naval authorities.

Only AIrias, 23, had a record of attempted homicide. Umaña is 19 years old and Corrales is 21 years old.

The United States Coast Guard, as part of the joint patrol, observed a suspicious boat, which is why they asked for permission to board it, at that moment the subjects began to flee and began to throw packages into the water,”

indicated the Ministry of Public Security in a press release.
