Turrialba Volcano erupted following seismic swarm

January 11, 2018 by Staff News Writer

In addition to the constant seismic activity that affects the northern region of the country, Turrialba Volcano also registered an eruption at 10:35 a.m. on Thursday. At 11:50 a.m, the event was still ongoing, according to the cameras installed on the site by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI).

That scientific entity reported that the column of gases and ash rose 300 meters above the colossus. In parallel, OVISCORI reports -at least- 10 earthquakes of considerable intensity in Guanacaste, in the vicinity of Tenorio Volcano. Marine Protti, seismologist of OVSICORI, said that this sequence of tremors is normal and it’s unknown exactly when it will end.

These earthquakes have occurred on the east and southwest flanks of the Tenorio volcano and are part of the same sequence that was activated by the Honduras earthquake,”

explained the expert.

According to Protti, at 11:03 a.m. there was an earthquake of 4.7 degrees, which has been the largest so far.

People perceive these earthquakes mainly in the area of Bijagua, Tierras Morenas, Guatuso, but the strongest have been felt even in La Fortuna de San Carlos and Monteverde. We do not have damage reports because they are happening in a quite uninhabited area because Tenorio Volcano National Park is pure mountain and there are no nearby towns,”

explained the expert.
