Turrialba Volcano shows weak and intermittent activity

March 13, 2017 by Staff News Writer

According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), the activity registered in Turrialba Volcano was weak and intermittent during weekend.

In previous days, the earthquakes inside the volcano located in Cartago have also registered similar behavior with low magnitudes. The eruptions are composed of gases and aerosols.

[Eruptions] have been scattered with a predominant wind direction towards the southwest,”

said the institution in its usual Facebook announcement.

These gases and aerosols have not caused discomfort in the communities. There are also no reports of ashfall or sulfur smell near the volcano or in the Central Valley.

The authorities keep an eye on this volcano, as well as on four others in the country, that are prone to make major eruptions, according to EliƩcer Duarte, a volcanologist from OVSICORI.
