Turrialba’s volcanic activity is normal, there won’t be a disaster

September 22, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Authorities from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) and the National Seismological Network (RSN) urge Costa Ricans not to believe “malicious” reports that talk about disasters and earthquakes as consequence of Turrialba’s volcanic activity.

According to Eliecer Duarte, expert from the OVSICORI, there is an audio circulating on WhatsApp which talks about a magnitude 8.5 earthquake. She stated that it is completely absurd and it only aims to scare people.

Eliecer added that earthquakes cannot be predicted and regarding the activity of the volcano, its current intensity does not allow earthquake to generate such a magnitude.

She also clarified that it is false that it is necessary to evacuate or suspend operations at Cartago Hospital, as it was rumoured.
