September 29, 2016 by Staff News Writer

2 suspects were arrested carrying a chainsaw, 2 fuel tanks and a machete. They were making illegal logging in Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park, located in Santa María.

In addition, sawn wood at poles and rules was found. According to Sergio Cascante, from the Conservation Area of Guanacaste (ACG), authorities have received several complaints for deforestion in 3 hectares around the forest.

According to Cascante, the suspects where arrested and the economic impact is significant, because there are about 10 million colones, but the forest impact will not be easily recovered.

Among the affected species there are meddlars, tabebuia and Myroxylon pereirae (known as bálsamo), which is an endangered tree and its extraction is prohibited under the Forestry Law Regulations.
