Uber driver was attacked

February 27, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Andrey became an uber driver seven months ago, since unemployment forced him to find alternatives to feed his children and pay the bills. However, on Saturday night he feared for his life when he fell prey of a trap set by red taxi drivers.

At 7 p.m., the driver accepted a trip that would leave from Caribbean terminal in San José. He recalls it was a “Jorge” who requested the trip.

When I arrived there were like 10 taxi drivers waiting for me, one said: ´that’s the son of a bitch’ and they all ran towards me. A police patrol was passing by and I intercepted it because I understood it was an ambush.

Everyone started kicking the car, and the police officers got out and asked the men to calm down, but they only backed down when they saw the baton one of the officers pulled out. I was asked if I wanted to make a complaint but I just wanted leave.

They were like 10 and I was alone in my car. If I was damn thief they would not do anything. I’m not stealing anything from anyone, I’m supporting my family, I’m paying for my house and my car. I make weekly payments to a car dealership and this week I don’t even have a third of the amount because I haven’t been able to work. The payment is due on Monday or I’ll have to return the car and here I am, working my ass off, for this to happen? I say they will continue to do this until someone loses control,”

told Andrey to the press.

This would be the second altercation this week. Last Thursday, at least 6 taxi drivers corralled another Uber driver in Paseo Colón.
