Uber’s impact in Costa Rica

August 22, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Uber entered Costa Rica without knocking. That was enough to revolutionize the already hectic transport service.

On August 21st, 2015, the application, from California, USA, started operations in Costa Rica and to date no one has been able to turn it off, but that does not mean that it hasn’t been amidst controversy.

Among taxi drivers discontent, growing demand and users’ opinion, there is still a lot to cover.

These are the 5 aspects that have characterized Uber:

-Government apathy: the executive has not made a proposal to regulate the application.
-Market revitalization: taxi drivers have had to change their strategy to get customers.
-Violence in streets: as in other countries, the arrival of Uber caused demonstrations and some violent acts on the road.
-Changes in operation: the implementation of Uber dynamic rate, which applies in rush hours, and Uber Van services (for more passengers) were some of the changes implemented in the country after few months of operation.
-Arrival of new applications: Uber success allowed other similar applications, such as Cabify, to focus on Costa Rica.
