Uber will charge 13% more from June

April 24, 2019 by Staff News Writer

As of June, Uber users will have to pay 13% more in each trips, as part of the Value Added Tax (VAT) that applies through the Law of Strengthening Public Finance.

This was indicated by Zoraida Rodríguez, Director of Government Relations and Public Policies for Central America and the Caribbean of Uber in the Economic Affairs Committee of the Legislative Assembly.

The spokesperson said this percentage will be transferred to users, while they will retain the money and transfer it to the Ministry of Finance.

Legislators believe Uber will be a legal service in the country because this tax would imply a de facto legalization, therefore, bill 21.228 that aims to regulate the transport service through digital platforms loses all its weight.

Rather, the discussion would be reoriented towards how to reduce the procedures and regulations for taxi drivers in order to equalize it.

The following pending issue would be the payment of income tax by Uber.
