UCR campaign seeks to eliminate single-use plastic

August 27, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The University of Costa Rica (UCR) calls for more people to join the campaign # noseásindiferente (don’t be indifferent) that seeks to eliminate single-use plastic.

The idea is that people say no to straws, plastic bags, and bottles that remain a few minutes in our hands, but take years to disappear.

Plastic represents 13% of waste. Similarly, it is estimated that around 270 thousand metric tons of plastic float in the oceans, fragmented into five billion particles. Each year, eight million tons of plastic are deposited in the oceans, which is equivalent to the contents of a garbage truck every minute.

Since January this year, the UCR issued a directive to replace single-use plastic for environmentally friendly products, both in cafeterias and in internal stores. This provision is added to the styrofoam elimination directive in 2016.

In the environmental week, the campaign “UCR free of plastic” will be launched, which will use the hashtag # noseásindifferent. The objective is to promote responsible consumption, reduction, and removal of plastic from everyday activities.
