June 14, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Wednesday, Savegre Reserve was declared the new Biosphere Reserve by the International Coordinating Council of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Program (MAB).

Savegre joins 23 other reserves in the world that promote the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

The nomination raises four biosphere reserves in Costa Rica. However, this is the first with a coastal marine component.

The now Savegre Biosphere Reserve possesses great biodiversity, since it houses 20% of the flora, 54% of the mammals and 59% of the birds of the country.

In addition, for some years, ecological tourism and sustainable aquaculture have become an important source of socio-economic development for the area.

With the designation, Savegre is internationally recognized as a Biosphere Reserve, nevertheless it will continue under the sovereignty of the Costa Rican State, which is in charge of ensuring compliance and maintenance of the characteristics that made its designation possible.
