Unusual sighting of a sea lion in Mal Pais

April 19, 2019 by Staff News Writer

A video on social networks shows a sea lion in the waters of the Costa Rican Pacific. The unusual sighting was confirmed by a source from a local entity, who preferred to remain anonymous.

Apparently it is a sea lion from the Galápagos, which is not usual to see in the national coasts, due to the temperature of the waters. It is believed that a current could have dragged it, separated it from the herd and taken it the Costa Rican coast.

The source that provided the information estimates that it is a juvenile male that has been around the Cabo Blanco, Mal Pais and Cabuyal sectors in the Nicoya Peninsula, for about three weeks.

About 15 years ago, the sighting of another animal of this species was reported in the same area and in the Manuel Antonio and Corcovado national parks.
