January 25, 2018 by Staff News Writer

On Thursday morning, the US embassy in Costa Rica donated three tactical security vehicles that will be part of the the country’s police forces fleet. The armored vehicles were donated to the Public Force, the Special Intervention Unit (UEI) of the Ministry of the Presidency and the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ).

This type of vehicle is used by the Special Service of Tactical Response (SERT) in the raids of the OIJ. This unit has used a vehicle called “The Protector” but at first it became popular as “The Beast.” According to Wálter Espinoza, OIJ’s chief, that vehicle was used 262 times during 2017, reflecting how useful they are.

It is a difficult moment in the subject of delinquency in the country so the help of friendly countries constitutes a very important possibility for us. The vehicle will be called El Justiciero,”

said Espinoza.

Mariano Figueres, director of the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) and the UEI, said that this equipment will allow better coordination between the authorities for war against organized crime.

Sharon Day, American ambassador in the country, highlighted that the vehicles are a reflection of the alliance between the two nations.

I can confirm that the support to the government of Costa Rica will continue for many more years,”

said Day.
