Video shows Perseids on Costa Rican sky

August 15, 2017 by Staff News Writer

A video shows the majesty of the Perseids stars in the national sky.

Gustavo Astúa recorded the video that shows the meteor shower in Costa Rica.

It’s a 30-minute time lapse, every 5 seconds a photo was taken. The location is kilometer 71 of Cerro de la Muerte,”

said Astúa.

The Persianas are observed from mid-July to the end of August. They are also known with the name of tears of San Lorenzo, because August 10th is the day of that saint.

These are high-speed meteors (59 km/s) that radiate from the Perseus constellation.

Its period of activity is long and runs between July 16th and August 24th. The maximum visibility is between August 11th and 13th, which makes it the third rain of the year (after the quatrains and the geminids). Perseids are most visible from the northern hemisphere during the summer.
