Video shows red-hot show in Turrialba Volcano

March 20, 2018 by Staff News Writer

With spectacular reddish tones due to the high temperatures, a video of more than two minutes compiles what happens inside Turrialba Volcano.

This colossus, one of the most active in the country, is constantly visited by scientists in charge of recommending actions around the massif. One of them is Geoffroy Avard, volcanologist at the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), who recorded and prepared the video.

The published images compile the activity that took place between January and March. It is possible to see the release of hot gases, the incandescence inside the crater, the external impacts by cold or lava pumps, and the strombolean eruptive activity occurred weeks ago.

The hot material that comes out of the volcano reaches temperatures between 800ºC and 900ºC.

Since its eruptive activity became more visible, in October 2014, Turrialba Volcano has experienced more intense periods in contrast to quieter volcanoes.
