Vote to issue emergency declaration due to violence against women to be held on Thursday

June 27, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Board of Directors of the National Institute of Women (INAMU) will vote to declare a national emergency due to violence against women in Costa Rica.

Patricia Mora, president of INAMU, told the media that, if approved, each institution should focus resources for the care of women, such as those aimed at educational campaigns or compliance with the economic rights of this population. Mora said the problem must to be treated as a national catastrophe.

We want it to go far beyond the symbolic. We are tying up our link with the different institutions that will commit to the decree (…) That is, signing a declaration as if the country were struck by a misfortune, by a national catastrophe. All the institutions work with a single purpose,”

told Mora to the press.

She also said that this declaration was a priority. Its approval and subsequent signing has been delayed for various reasons, including the drafting of the text and the World Cup, an inappropriate time to enact a national emergency, according to INAMU.
