Water dispute in Playa Potrero escalates

AyA (Aqueducts and Sewers) has announced that it will retain exclusive control over a water well in Playa Portero, after a judge in an administrative court ordered that police assist the state agency in taking possession of the well. Representatives for the agency have said they will begin making improvements, and hope to provide quality service to the community.

The community well (or ASADA) was built in 1991. However, AyA is relying on a law that gives the state exclusive control over water resources. The case is scheduled to go before the constitutional court on August 20th. In the interim AyA, will control the well. However, AyA officials say they face constant threats of violence.

Residents are worried that the water supply will be used for political ends, and cite the expropriation of a community water well in Playa Flamingo as an example.
