What happened to the lagoons left by Hurricane Otto in Irazú?

After a month of becoming the main attraction of the Irazú Volcano National Park, the three lagoons and a small waterfall that formed as a result of Hurricane Otto have disappeared completely.

The amount of rain recorded in 48 hours and the clay condition of the terrain facilitated the formation of the lagoons. But the late arrival of the dry season eventually evaporated them.

The lagoon located in the crater known as Playa Hermosa was one meter deep and the one in the crater named “Diego de la Haya” was a little larger. In addition, there was one located in an area that tourists cannot access.

The last lagoon disappeared last week. It is a normal process because the terrain is not totally impermeable and there is leakage. After the hurricane passed, the rainy season ended and the sunny days began, causing the lagoons to evaporate,”

said Henry Villalta, an official from the Irazú Volcano National Park.

The lagoons became an extra attraction for visitors during the end of the year. Many tourists even traveled to the area just to see the lagoons.

We had several cold fronts and still the tourists, mainly Costa Ricans, were asking about the lagoons. It was strange for us, because this is not so rare, it has already happened on other occasions,”

added Villalta.

If you could not see the lagoons, do not worry, sometimes they form during the rainy season. So, with a little luck, you will be able to see them in October or November.
