When will Turrialba volcano stop its eruptive activity?

January 5, 2017 by Staff News Writer

In less than a year, Turrialba volcano has had three eruptive-cycle activities.

The increase in the emission of ash and gases that started on December 28th joins similar cycles that took place from March to April and from September to October 2016.

The ‘calm’ cycles do not mean that the volcano is inactive. They are simply periods of less internal seismic activity and a low or zero emanation of gases, steam and ash.

Talking about an estimated days for decreased activity is impossible because nature is unpredictable.

This last cycle is known due to a constant emission of gas and ash, highlighted by an absence of incandescent material. Even ash particles are reaching areas such as Heredia, Coronado, Guadalupe or San José.

The activity is accompanied by an internal earthquake that is not altered despite the abundant material.

The volcano activity has increased since October 2014.

If we take into account the forecasts of experts and volcanologists, it is expected that the volcano continues with this behavior for an indefinite period of time.
