Why was an alleged drug trafficker wanted in the US hiding in Costa Rica?

September 6, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Interpol office in Costa Rica revealed details about the arrest of Mario Juan Pereira Ramos, a 35-year-old Nicaraguan, arrested on Thursday afternoon at a restaurant in Sabana Norte, San José.

Pereira is as an alleged drug trafficking leader wanted by the US justice system.

Luis Diego Morera, sub-head of Interpol in Costa Rica, explained that the foreigner is listed as the supposed leader of a criminal organization based in the Central American region with links in Mexico.

Intelligence reports received by Costa Rica confirmed that Pereira had been here for two months. Apparently, he rented houses in Limón and Heredia, places where he constantly moved. He also traveled frequently to Nicaragua.

Interpol verified that in Costa Rica he does not have a legal entry registry, so it seems everything he came through “blind spots” on the northern border.

In Heredia, the property where he lived was luxurious and recently built. However, Morera emphasized that the Nicaraguan maintained a low profile and tried not to raise suspicions. He moved in recent model vehicles, but not luxury brands.

In the restaurant where he was arrested he was with his wife and a newborn son. There were also two friends from Nicaragua who entered the country on September 4th.
