Ya no más RECOPE: “referendum is closer”

September 16, 2016 by Staff News Writer

“Ya no más RECOPE” group claims that a referendum to open the Costa Rican Oil Refinery (RECOPE) monopoly is closer.

3 days ago we got an email, they informed us that everything was legal. We have now sent it back to the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE). We believe that since it is a constitutional project, there is a 98% chance to be approved by the Court,

declared Mauricio Sánchez, member of the group.

According to Sánchez, they were requested small changes, such as the name and some words, which they expect to be ready next week.

If approved by the TSE, the next step would be receiving the official lists to collect signatures. The group will have 9 months to collect  them. After that time, the lists will be sent to the TSE. Once it checks that everything is in order, the referendum date is established.
