A supermoon is the coincidence of a Full moon or a New moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit.
The reason for this is that the lunar orbit is elliptical and its center does not correspond with the center of the Earth and during these cases, a little bigger and brighter moon can be seen.
