Young people met to find solutions to Climate Change

May 6, 2018 by Staff News Writer

More than 250 young people from different sectors and provinces of Costa Rica participated in the YouthSpeak Forum at the Bar Association this Sunday. The objective of the event was to motivate attendees to produce innovative and feasible ideas to contribute to the direction of the country regarding Climate Change.

The 2018 YouthSpeak Forum (YSF) involved participants with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): “Action for climate”, “Sustainable cities and communities” and “Responsible production and consumption”.

From the YouthSpeak Forum we have involved more than 750 young people in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with the purpose of moving from being spectators to main characters of social change and taking action to eliminate the problems that we face,”

said María Amalia Salas Rodríguez, Vice President of Marketing.

In the framework of Climate Change, attendees made the largest reforestation day for young people in Central America, by planting trees in the María Aguilar River with the support of Magical Trees and the Environmental Classroom of the Municipality of San José.

The Minister of Culture and Youth, Sylvie Durán, and the Resident Coordinator of the UN in Costa Rica, Alice Shackelford, participated in the event, as well as experts on Climate Change , Sustainable Cities, and Production and Responsible Consumption; Julián Arias, Andrea San Gil, and Juan Carlos Pinar, respectively.

This initiative is developed worldwide by AIESEC in order to create spaces for interaction between young people and the public and private sector around the SDGs. In its two previous editions, the YouthSpeak Forum had an impact on more than 500 young people in Costa Rica.

AIESEC is recognized by UNESCO as the largest non-profit organization present in 128 countries and territories.
