5 lawyers arrested in a auto theft gang

May 19, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The judicial investigation police (OIJ) dismantled an auto robbery band in 10 raids deployed in several points of the Great Metropolitan Area.

Christian Montenegro, deputy chief of the criminal investigation department, said that 14 people were detained, among they there are five notary lawyers.

These subjects would rob cars in Costa Rica and Panama, then with the help of notaries they tampered the vehicles with data from Costa Rica and afterward they sold the car to unsuspecting persons”, said the officer.

The ring leader was captured in Moravia and there were also detentions made in Heredia, San José, Guápiles and Liberia.

There are 13 vehicles involved in the investigation. Authorities do not discard finding more vehicles.

The vehicles are recent models and were stolen taking advantage of their owners distraction. The investigation started in March 2014.
