During the past year some 456 people died from road accidents. In fact, the year ended with the highest mortality rate in recent history: 9.32 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays were the days when more people died on the road during 2016. The main victims: motorcyclists, motorcycle companions and vehicles’ drivers.
This year things did not get better. As of January 29th, 43 road deaths were recorded, 13 more cases compared to the same period last year.
One of the first steps to begin tackling the problem is modifying the law to allow the Transit Police to make parts without the presence of the driver, which could be useful in hit-and-run cases.
