Former ombudsman will be accused of multiple crimes

November 9, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Public Ministry will request the opening proceedings against Ofelia Taitelbaum, former ombudsman accused of multiple crimes.

As confirmed by the Prosecutor’s Office of Probity, Transparency and Anti-Corruption, the accusation against the former employee was already made. However, they are notifying the parties.

Taitelbaum will be charged with 39 possible offenses of falsifying, 2 possible coercions, 39 allegedly false-document use and 24 apparent embezzlements.

The deadline will expire on November 14th. After this date, the prosecution will present the accusation in the Criminal Court of Taxation to request a trial.

This investigation started after a complaint filed by María de los Ángeles Otárola, a seamstress from Ciudad Quesada who had trouble securing herself before the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS).

After investigating the reason why she was not eligible for social insurance, Otárola filed a complaint with the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) because she discovered that she appeared, without her consent, as a consultant in a Taitelbaum company called Inversiones Beyof.

Apparently Otárola would have received ¢ 32 million from that society in a period of 5 years. However, she stated that she had not received any money from them. In addition, she had never testified before taxation.
