Mosquitoes: small criatures, great threats

November 21, 2016 by Staff News Writer

A campaign from the Health Ministry aims to remind you that mosquitoes, although small, may pose a major threat to your health.

Because of this, a campaign was launched. It intends to connect young people with their communities in order to deliver a prevention message.

The initiative includes messages through informative videos and animated images that can be shared via WhatsApp and social networks.

Daniel Salas, director of Health Surveillance, explained to students from Luis Dobles Segrega High School how important it is to eliminate mosquitoes’ breeding sites because dengue, zika and chikungunya are real diseases in the country.

He said that zika has already shown its devastating consequences in Costa Rica. Last week, it was confirmed the first national case of microcephaly due to zika in a baby.

In addition, there are two people who developed the Guillain Barré syndrome after having the zika virus.

The officer determined that the most effective protection measure is through the elimination of breeding sites.

It is also essential to use condoms during sex, especially if you live in endemic areas, as zika is also transmitted through sexual intercourse.
