Ministry of Health will rely on survey’s results to improve policies on sexual health care

The result of the Second National Survey of Sexual and Reproductive Health that was carried out in the country in 2015 was presented on December 12th. More than 3,200 men and women were interviewed to determined that:

-More than half of the women surveyed and two thirds of the men have had sex at 18 years old.

-Half of the participating mothers did not want their last pregnancy, while one in three men did not want their partner’s last pregnancy either.

-One in three women had their first sexual intercourse before the age of 15.

-Three in four respondents can identify HIV/AIDS as a sexually transmitted infection but less than half can identify other infections.

Ministry Health officials stated that these results will enable them to improve the policies to ensure a better sexual and reproductive health care for all people in the country.

Ana Helena Chacón, vice president of the Republic, expressed that it is necessary to talk about the issue in order to protect and educate many young people in Costa Rica.
