Parque del Este is disgusting and ICODER is “working” on it

January 10, 2017 by Staff News Writer

No one explains why or how there are washing machines, microwaves, fans and junk at Parque del Este; especially during this time, where entire families pay a thousand colones to visit the place and play. Instead, they come across a space where children are exposed to high risk materials like cans, nails and others.

The concern is generated because hazardous materials and waste were accumulated by the Costa Rican Institute of Sport (ICODER) cleaning the site. However, it has not disposed of the rubble, which is only separated by a yellow tape.

However, both adults and children are at risk. This is recognized by the authorities of the ICODER who explained that for the first time a total cleaning was carried out and that they coordinated with the Technological Institute for the responsible and sustainable management of this waste.

Alba Quesada, director of the institution, recognized the tape is not the most suitable solution. According to the official, the idea was to complete the work in December, but they were unable to do so. Now, they will use their own truck to avoid having to pay a private transport.

Complaints also include broken playgrounds and rusty fencing that overshadows the recreation center. For ICODER this situation is not new. Every year they struggle against the vandalism that affects the 7 parks administered by the entity.

According to Quesada, the works and removal of trash is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
