International Court of Justice decides Costa Rica–Nicaragua case

January 17, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Government of Costa Rica made a request: that the International Court of Justice in The Hague sets the amount of money Nicaragua must pay as compensation for damages caused in Calero in 2010, when it militarily invaded the area.

Costa Rica granted additional days to reach an agreement with Nicaragua, since president Ortega wanted to pay the debt. Unfortunately, despite our gesture, we have not received any response,

declared Foreign Minister Manuel González.

In December 2015, the International Court of Justice stated that Nicaragua had violated the international law by occupying Costa Rican territory. For this reason, it had to pay a financial compensation and the Court gave the parties a year to reach an agreement.

In 2016, Costa Rica estimated a 6-million-dollar compensation, which was rejected by Daniel Ortega’s government. As consequence, Costa Rica requested the Court to make the final decision.
