ARESEP: “Tuasa can’t charge 1,200 colones for a transportation service”

January 20, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) is against the ¢ 1200 charge that Tuasa intends to apply for a transportation service from Alajuela to San José.

The amount, established by the company, was endorsed by the Public Transport Council (CTP) and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT). However, ARESEP was never consulted and it is the entity in charge of setting rates for public transport services.

ARESEP is worried because users could be affected and it confirmed that the CTP has already approved the rate.

To date, ARESEP has not received either a request from the company regarding an authorization to set this tariff nor a series of documents that it has requested to know CTP conditions to authorize this charge.

Although the CTP and the MOPT have assured that this is a special service that does not require ARESEP approval, the regulator insists that this is not true, since a special service can only be provided by the occasional transport of excursion, workers’ transport, students’ transport and tourism.

The CTP announced that the case will be studied by the Attorney General’s Office to analyze whether the charge proceeds or not. However, the service is suspended until the entity sets its verdict.
