Authorities are hunting loggers

February 8, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Officials of the Public Force and officials of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) seized 210 logs and 14 trees clear-felled in the indigenous sector of Palmira de Potrero Grande, in Buenos Aires, Puntarenas.

The officers, who are constantly patrolling and conducting roadblocks and coordinating with the MINAE, received an alert for illegal logging, so they immediately went to the place and managed to seize the wood of trees of the “guachipelín” and cedar species.

According to the authorities, the wood was located in two farms and a vacant lot. Minutes later they located a truck driven by a man named Nájera, who had lots of logs but no permits.

This situation was presented to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for environmental damage and remains under investigation by the Judicial Police.

The Public Force has a zero tolerance policy for the protection of the environment in indigenous territories is of zero tolerance.

This type of activity often occurs in rural areas where police have dismantled organized gangs, some of which are dedicated to exporting wood, a business well paid by Asians.
