March 1, 2017 by Staff News Writer

According to the National Seismological Network (RSN), there were 197 earthquakes in February, whereas in January there were 179; although only 11 were perceived by the population.

In February, there were concentrations of earthquakes in the Central Pacific, the South and mainly in the central part of the country. There were also minor concentrations of earthquakes in the North Pacific and the Northern Zone.

According to the report by the entity, the strongest earthquake occurred on Monday, February 27th. It was a 3.5-degree tremor that occurred at a depth of 3 kilometers, near Orosí in Cartago.

The RSN reported that most (10) of the perceived earthquakes of the month are related to a local fault, and only one is associated with the subduction process of the Coco plate under the Caribbean plate.
