Maduro orders investigation into violent attack on Congress

July 5, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro condemned an incursion of government supporters to the Parliament’s headquarters, which resulted in serious injuries to five opposition legislators.

I absolutely condemn these actions, as far as I know them. I will never be complicit in any violence,”

said Maduro in a military parade on Independence Day, not admitting that the people who broke into the Legislature were his followers.

Before thousands of soldiers at Fort Tiuna in Caracas, the president referred to the incursion as “strange actions in some corridors” of the parliamentary compound.

I have ordered an investigation and that justice is done… I do not accept violence from anyone. I condemn all acts of violence and I ask for peace, justice and harmony,”

added Maduro.

He also demanded that the opposition repudiates the acts of violence that have taken place in the context of the protests against his government since April 1st, with a total of 91 deaths, a thousand wounded and more than 3,000 arrests.
