A total of 105 students from the Holanda School in Alajuela, receive lessons on the correct performance as pedestrians, passengers and future drivers of public roads.
The initiative is part of a pilot project of the General Directorate of Road Education of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT), which started in May, but the idea is to cover other schools in the country.
The program is designed so that children receive two weekly lessons of 40 minutes each, where they develop contents related to road safety.
According to Hugo Jiménez, Director of Road Education, early childhood education contributes to the creation of appropriate attitudes and practices in roads that subsequently generate positive changes in road culture.
We are convinced that road education is the main tool to save lives on the road. With this pilot plan to raise awareness of our children, we are committed to the inclusion of Road Safety as a subject of study in general education. Our students are pedestrians and passengers now, and they will become drivers,”
said Jiménez.
In the classes, students learn basic concepts, objectives and background of road education, correct behavior of pedestrians, correct use of the bicycle as a vehicle on public roads, our country’s road system, adequate performance as a future driver, benefits and consequences of the using the safety belt, consequences of disrespecting traffic signals, among other topics.
