Claro and Movistar paid $43 million for radio spectrum

July 19, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Claro and Telefónica-Movistar companies paid a total of $43 million for the 70 MHz of mobile frequencies at the auction held on Wednesday by SUTEL.

Claro paid $19 million for two blocks of frequencies in the 1,800 MHz band and another in the 2,100 MHz band. Movistar gave $24 million for another pair of blocks in the 1,800 MHz band and the remaining two blocks in the 2,100 MHz.

Both companies jointly won seven blocks of radio spectrum auctioned on Wednesday by the Superintendence of Telecommunications (SUTEL).

Claro and Movistar were the only firms that submitted their offers and complied with the established conditions.

According to Osman Rodríguez, Telefónica’s CEO for Central America, their participation

is a sign of the long-term commitment to continue investing and offering the best navigation experience to all users, also strengthening our presence in the business segment that demands a greater capacity network.”

With the above, it is expected that both companies will be able to provide a better service in mobile Internet, calls and messages.
