Legislators from three political parties demanded the Government to regulate the Celiac Act approved by the Legislative Assembly 18 months ago.
On June 13th, lawmakers Emilia Molina, from the Citizen Action Party (PAC), Luis Vásquez, from the Partido Social Cristiana (PUSC), and Francisco Camacho from Frente Amplio sent a letter to the President of the Republic, Luis Guillermo Solís, asking him to promulgate the regulation.
The petition was sent to Economy Minister Geannina Dinarte, who has not yet responded when the regulation will come into effect.
The law declared the medical care for celiac disease as national interest and created the instruments for the health sector to properly care for gluten intolerant people.
It also established the requirements for correct labeling and monitoring of gluten-free products, hence the urgency of a regulation for its application.
Celiac disease is a genetic defect in the immune system that affects 1% of the world’s population.
