Subjects arrested for illegally transporting Ticos to the US

November 24, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Thursday, the Professional Migration Police arrested two Costa Rican people linked to a criminal organization for human trafficking, specifically the trafficking of Costa Ricans to the United States.

The subjects were arrested in two raids carried out in sectors of Pérez Zeledón, under the functional direction of the Deputy Prosecutor’s Office of the First South Circuit (Pérez Zeledón) of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The subjects arrested are the leader of the organization, Umaña Mora, and his collaborator, Umaña Leiva, alias Cholito.

Through the police proceedings, carried out by the investigators of the Professional Migration Police, it was possible to verify that Umaña Mora and Umaña Leiva promoted, planned, coordinated and executed the illicit trafficking of Costa Rican people to the United States in 2016.

Umaña Mora was in charge of contacting their victims offering them the service of taking them to the United States “legally”, taking advantage of the vulnerability and work need of these people.

Immediately, Umaña mora executed all the planning and previous coordination that included visiting the house of the victims to explain the trip and the cost of the trip, offering the facility to mortgage their homes as a way of paying for the service while it was canceled.

Subsequently, Umaña Leiva went with the victims to the branch of the Bank of Costa Rica of Pérez Zeledón to obtain the passport, as well as to take care of transferring them to the province of San José, where he coordinated the accommodation in a hotel in the capital while buying air tickets so that these people could start their journey to the United States. However, their victims never reached their destination, because they were detected in Mexico and returned to Costa Rica.
