Candidates have 30 days to convince voters with advertising

January 4, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The electoral ban for Christmas and New Year’s Eve was completed on January 1st. From January 3rd and until the 31st (four days before the elections), the presidential candidates and the political parties have permission to advertise in the media.

The candidates have a month to convince voters to go to the polls to support them. If they don’t win, they’ll also have a chance to fight for the presidency in the second round.

January 28th marks the last day for parties to hold meetings or hold meetings in public areas, such as concentrations and others.

They can now use the necessary strategies to reach citizens, either in the media or in activities in public squares; and yes, they need the Court’s authorization for that,”

said Esteban Durán, of the TSE.

Candidates used their social networks during the ban to transmit their message or interact with the population, which is allowed, as long as they did not spread propaganda. The campaign will now enter a phase without truce to get voters’ support.
