Gunmen assaulted 15 tourists at hotel in Cocles

March 19, 2014 by Staff News Writer

Despite the assault last Saturday, Malbec restaurant located in Cocles beach will operate normally. | RONNY Jaen

On Saturday at 9am, three armed men entered the Malbec restaurant in Cocles Beach, Limon, and robbed fifteen foreign tourists and the owner of the business. Police reported that the criminals brandished guns and machetes, and took cell phones, cash, and passports. Among the victims were French, German and American tourists.

After the assault, the restaurant has continued to function normally and will not take additional security measures, such as hiring a security guard. Police in the area have complained they have few resources. For example, there may be a call in Punta Uva at the same time as in Puerto Viejo and there may only be one vehicle available.

In February and March of last year there were a series of attacks on area hotels.
